Great Depression Reflection

Page history last edited by Heather Welch 8 mos ago

Write the details from the pictures and Lange’s description that strike you in some way.

Make some personal response to those details.

Write a summary or a poem; pose questions; draw a picture; make some kind of personal connection to the visual and verbal information.

I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet. I do not remember how I explained my presence or my camera to her, but I do remember she asked me no questions. I made five exposures, working closer and closer from the same direction. I did not ask her name or her history. She told me her age, that she was thirty-two. She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed. She had just sold the tires from her car to buy food. There she sat in that lean- to tent with her children huddled around her, and seemed to know that my pictures might help her, and so she helped me. There was a sort of equality about it. The picture strike me because they make me want to help them by giving them food. The rags are not plesant, and they look uncomfortable. The first picture makes my think that the mother is thinking about something. She might be remembering her husband, or someone specail, wish that person was still there. The little boy in the 3rd picture loks like he is concentrating on something that doen't need to be concentrated on. That's because he's looks so bored, so he needs to do something. That thing they live in looks uncomfortable. People can easily steal from it. They are easy victims, too.

The pictures toughed me because i am here taking everything i have for nothing and they have nothing and are thankful to get stuff. I just wish that i could go back and help them. I would give food water and money. I wish I could know what it was like to live like that and it would be so great if I could help them.

When I look at those pictures what strikes me the most is that I know they are still trying to live in peace and are trying to get money to buy food.I can't believe they lived on frozen vegatables so long!I don't even like frozen vegatables. It's so sad!Like the mom that sold the tires to there car, she was probably thinking of her, but she was probably thinking of her children more. This is the part were you say AAAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!

When she said that they were surviving on frozen vegetables it makes you think that maybe those story's that your parents tell you really did happen and there was a time when life wasn't as good as the times that we were going through because some little children, adults, and granparents had died because there was no food or there wasn't enough food for everyone and the adults put there lifes out there so the children could survive the harsh times.

Surviving on frozen veggies, yuck! They must've never bathed and had very miserable living conditions. When my grandma and grandpa they told me about this, I have a confession, I barely even listened to that. But those pictures made me feel sorry for that family and all the other vets and hobos during the depression. C K

I felt sorry for them , i mean i wish i could be there to give them some food and fresh water. And they dont have any toys or anythang to play with . And the parents sometimes in places like that would have to go hungry for a day so there children could servive. And the mom even sold her tires just for food and now they can drive anywere. They also live inb those little tent with no pretection from the cold, it just makes you fell how gratefull i am that i have a home and a car. \

The family looks so sad. In the first picture, the mom looks like she is looking for something or thinking about something. She looks like in her mind she is saying"would someone come and help me and my family? We really need it." In the second picture, they look so tired and hungry. It makes me sad and I wish that I could give them some food or help them out in some sort of way.

these pictures are very sad. they make me realize the importance of the great depression and the way people lived during that time.
this teaches that even when times are hard, with a little bit of hope. we can get through them. ( i know cheeesy right?)

I feel realy sad about the lady and the people who were with her becaus it makes me think of my old cat kiki. we had to put her asleep because she had a weird thing on her nose that made it hard for her to eat and sleep. She was sick and coulden't even get up the stairs without having to take a break. She was allways sheding but I loved her. I know how they feel from my cat. I feel sad.

I think that it would make me feel very sad because they did not have such as an easy life like ours right now, also i would be bored and hungry because it was hard for them to find something to eat where they lived and the did not have much to do and they had NO privasy in their very small crammed houses.

The pictures made me feel very sad because I feel so bad for the families who are less fortunate than us. The mom in the first picture looks very depressed and she looks like she is so sad. I think that she is sad because she misses someone such as her husbaand or another family member. I know that I would be vey sad if I lost a family member such as a brother, mother, father, etc. I remember when we lost our dog. She was the best.

When I saw this picture I felt really bad and sorry for those people.I mean it really made me appreciate my house and everything I have.I used to think all those srories my grandpa told me were fake, but when i saw this picture it made me realize that it actually happended and all those people suffered from the economy and what President hoover did.I hated to see all those little kids and adults, even babies look so sad.Seeing how people lived in The Great Deppression has opened my eyes and made me see how good I have it.

I thought that it was horrible that they had to put up with living in things such as tents and screwed up homes that are not very private nor are they warm . Just thinking that they had to live like that and not being ablie to eat or drink fresh water is sad.

The woman and children in the picture seem like they are sad and had no hope left. Killing birds, selling the tires on their cars, eating frozen vegtables, and living in a tent just to survive. I would be so sad to have to live like that. I also know how bad it really is. My grandpa lived through the Depression, although he was only a very young boy then. But, I do remember he said he lived in a tent and took baths in an icy cold river. Think about how freezing it would be in the winter. I just cannot imagine living like that. It really was a time of hardship.

I will feel sorry for the people in the Great Depressoin. Those pictures up on the top make you very, very , very sad. There clothes look very old and it looks like they have been working for hours and there were tired. There life compared to mine is a whole different story. They did not have that much money back in the Great Depression. The cloths they wear is a lot worst than my cloths, shoes, and pants. In the 3rd picture, the boy looks very sad and bored. There house looks like a tornado had destroyed it and there is not that much privite. Some people just lived in there cars instead.I feel so lucky that I have a place to live and clothes that look descent. I use to think that grandma's and grandpa's use to lie about the stories, but when I saw these pictures, the inside of my body feels very sad and heart-broken.

I feel very sorry for them because they had no food,no money, and not even a house, just a lean-to tent. They would only eat what they could find. That would be very hard. In the second picture, the boys look like they are extremely tired and hungry. This was one of americas worst times in history.
